Calling all Makers/Hackers/Crafters

On Saturday 19th May 2012 the Handmade: Digital | DIY | Craft Faire will once again be taking over one of Manchester’s most beautiful venues, Victoria Baths, for an event exploring digital techniques and contemporary craft, as part of FutureEverything Festival 2012.

Last year’s event featured innovative work from artists working in the intersection of craft and digital technology, talks and installations by artist Michael Eden and Anthony Hall, and workshops by MzTEK (Space Studios, London), FABlab and Chinese Arts Centre.

FutureEverything once again invites makers to create objects, installations and performances that explore the cross-fertilisation of new and traditional media and materials.

If you would like the opportunity to showcase pre-existing or new work please fill in the Handmade Application Form before the deadline to secure your place.

Further details are included in the application form and an information pack will be sent out to successful applicants after the deadline date.

Deadline for submissions Friday 27th January 2012 at 12 noon.

One of the postcards team, Rosie Gainsborough, is soon to be published in Inc. Magazine. She recently blogged about it on her blog. Here’s what she said:

The launch party for issue 4 of inc. magazine is coming up, you should get down to Railroad Cafe in Hackney and have a look. I was very pleased to be able to contribute to the issue with my drawing inspired by a fantastic poem written by Glor Sanders. Thanks to Anya and Will for asking me, I’m really looking forward to seeing it in print!

Isabel Greenberg, one of the artists in Postcards from Europe, has just won the Observer/Cape Graphic Short Story award, for her story ‘Love in a Very Cold Climate’.

The story is a particularly lovely one. Its also the first installment of her ‘Encyclopedia of Early Earth’. Watch her website for more.

As well as the half term workshops, we have been running some workshops with A Level Art and Graphic design students from the local school, Thomas Adams.

In the first of these workshops we gave the students a guided tour of the exhibition, and gave a presentation about the work that went in to producing it, as well as the ins and outs of the Youth In Action programme. We also set the students a creative brief, based on the brief given to the European artists. We asked them to design a set of postcards for Wem, to replace the existing designs available on the high street.

A selection of these designs will be printed, and made available to visitors of Wem Town Hall.

Above are some photos of the second of the sessions, where we reviewed the work done on the postcard designs so far.

We will be publishing the selected designs on this blog, next week.

Over the half term we held some drawing workshops at the town hall, for young people aged 7-12 years. Each participant (and us!) had fun cutting, sticking, drawing, stamping and learning how to use drawing tablets, taking inspiration from the postcards in the exhibition.

Rosie Gainsborough designed this beautiful postcard for all the guests at our launch event, and visitors to the exhibition, to take away with them.

On the back of the postcard is information about our exhibition, as well as space for people to write their own personal message. We thought it was an appropriate way to spread the news about our project!

We’ve got lots left, so drop us an email if you’d like to receive some to send out to friends and family.

Our launch event on Saturday was a great success!

It was the first chance we’ve had to see all parts of the project completed, and to step back a little and see it as a whole.

We were pleased to be able to celebrate the project’s exhibition, book, and website with friends, family, and participating artists who had managed to come from various places around the UK (thanks again to Emanuela Santini who visited us from Croatia a few weeks ago!).

We were also glad to have a chance to toast the people who made the project possible - all of the artists who took part and sent us such quality work, our funders (the British Council and European Commission) and our partners, Wem Town Hall and NOISE Festival, both of whom have given us brilliant support throughout the project.

We had a camera-man, Charlie Newman, there to record the day. The finished piece will be up on the website soon, so even those who couldn’t make it can see what the day was like.

On Saturday 22nd October we’re holding an event at Wem Town Hall to celebrate our exhibition, website and publication.

It’ll be a chance to meet lots of the artists who’ve taken part, and say thank you to everyone who has made this project possible.

The event will be open to the public at 11am. Further drinks and refreshments will be provided for special guests from 1 -3pm. After that we’ll have a little afterparty in the pub.

We hope to see lots of you there!

It was a tricky, sticky, business made trickier by time constraints.
